Locate Special Diet is LIVE!

It’s finally here. After a year and a half of work and research, the Locate Special Diet website is live. Oh… it feels so good to type those words. Let me tell you a little bit about my baby…

Locate Special Diet helps people find local businesses that cater to a gluten-free, vegetarian, or organic lifestyle.

The database currently includes approximately 30,000 businesses in over 27 U.S. cities. Users can browse local restaurants and grocery stores by location, dietary preference and type of food. There is also a section to filter places that offer gluten-free, vegetarian or organic drinks. Austin is currently the only city with the largest drinks database, and it includes places to get smoothies, juices or even gluten-free beer.

Don’t see your favorite local business in the database? Users can submit businesses to Locate Special Diet and after they are approved by our team, we will add them in. This includes restaurants, grocery stores and drinks for any city. Our team is also furiously working to extend the current database to reach others looking to find places that cater to their special diet lifestyle.

I thought I would share some of my Favorite Things About Locate Special Diet.

Apple-Pumpkin Butter

Happy first day of Fall! Fall is definitely in the air here in Austin (kind of). The temperature is giving us a short break (hopefully long break), pumpkins are being spotted at our neighborhood grocery stores, and the candy is filling the shelves for the trick or treaters.  It’s hard to believe it’s almost October. Life gets busy. Especially when you are starting a company companies, finishing graduate school (October!), and just the general hustle and bustle of life… [Read more...]

A Gluten-Free 4th of July: Recipe Roundup

It’s almost the fourth of July weekend and we’ve rounded up some delicious recipes the whole family will enjoy. Menu planning for holiday parties can be difficult sometimes with the hustle and bustle of life. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! [Read more...]

Beanitos Giveaway + Chipotle Bean Dip Recipe

I’m a sucker for a crunchy snack, especially ones of chip consistency. Beanitos is a local company that makes some of the most flavorful gluten-free chips out there. I’ve been a big fan of theirs for a while now, and was pleased to hear that they now have 4 flavors, and all 4 flavors will soon come in single serve packages (this month). Flavors include: black bean, pinto bean and flax, pinto bean, cheddar and flax, [Read more...]

Oven Baked Tilapia with Butter Sauce

This recipe is perfect for a busy weeknight dinner. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place white fish (I used Tilapia this time) in a small casserole dish. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil, and sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of fish. Place fresh thyme leaves throughout. Slice a couple rounds of compound butter, place on top of fish, and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until fish is flaky. Serve over raw carrot and parsley salad.

Hello swimsuit season! We are trying to keep it somewhat light around here; especially with the amount of baking we have been doing!

Stay tuned for some great posts this month including: a new segment of ATX Gluten-Free News, a Gluten-Free Ratio Rally recipe (I joined!), and giveaways from Free From Gluten, Simply Sugar and Gluten-Free and Elana’s Pantry.

Two Compound Butters: Orange-Jalapeño and Lemon-Parsley-Thyme

What’s my secret to spicing up sauces, steaks, vegetables, fish and more? Compound butter. Compound butter is a great way to add an extra layer of flavor to a dish. It’s basically a fancy term for adding herbs, zests or anything with flavor to plain old butter. They are easy to make and the possibility of ingredient combinations are endless. My favorite way to use compound butter is with proteins. I’ll saute shrimp and fish with this orange-jalapeño butter or drizzle melted lemon-parsley-thyme butter on steaks and chicken.

Gluten-Free Béchamel, White Sauce or White Gravy

Just because you are gluten-free, doesn’t mean that you can’t have gravy with your mashed potatoes, a rich cheese sauce with your macaroni and cheese, a lovely alfredo sauce with your pasta, or a roux with your gumbo. Many people use corn starch as an thickening alternative to flour, but I find it leaves a weird aftertaste sometimes. I prefer arrowroot powder or flour. It is much smoother and creates a nice white sauce which you see above. Make a cheese sauce with this béchamel and use it with your fondue pot. Perfect for Valentine’s day!

Roasted Red Bell Pepper Sauce

Looking for a sauce that will jazz up your chicken or pasta dish? Look no further than this roasted red bell pepper sauce. I’m pretty sure it is my new favorite. I was actually eating it by the spoonful when my boyfriend (known as Chris from here on out) wasn’t looking. No, I am not kidding. We have been testing pizza recipes non-stop here in the ATX Gluten-Free kitchen. It was time for a change of pace this weekend, so we turned to America’s favorite animal protein (chicken), and took it to the next level. [Read more...]

Shredded Brussels Sprouts with Red Bell Pepper Sauce and Feta

We are starting off the new year right, here at ATX Gluten-Free. A side dish loaded with nutrients and antioxidants; this brussels sprouts dish is truly delicious. Even if you are not a fan of brussels sprouts; this dish will change your mind.

I hope everyone had a wonderful time during the holiday season. My vacation was packed with great conversation, beautiful views (Palm Springs and Jackson Hole), and yummy food. I feel truly blessed to be able to interact with you all on my blog, Twitter and Facebook each day. It has been a wild ride and I can’t wait for what 2011 will bring. [Read more...]

Roasted Hazelnut Chocolate Spread

You had me at chocolate spread. That is what my boyfriend said when I told him my idea for this recipe. Holy moly, this spread is amazing. I had to stop myself from eating it all in one sitting. I even turned this recipe into cookies and crackers (which will be posted after the holidays). I hope everyone is having a wonderful December. I’m currently vacationing in Palm Springs and will be heading to Jackson Hole soon. [Read more...]
