Tuesday Treasures: Bard’s Beer (Gluten-Free)

Welcome to the second posting in Tuesdays Treasures!

One of the most popular questions I get from the newly diagnosed (or people just curious about the gluten-free lifestyle) is what alcoholic beverages do you drink? My answer is that there are plenty of alcoholic beverages out there that are gluten-free; you just need to know what to look for. I personally stick with vodka or wine, but sometimes it is nice to have an ice-cold beer. There are a few gluten-free beers in the US. Only 3 mainstream gluten-free beers may be found in Texas, and they are Bard’s, Redbridge and Greens.

The POM Perfect Cocktail (Gluten-Free)

All you need is a pitcher, serving glasses, Hibiscus tea or Red Zinger Tea, 1 bottle of champagne, 2 small bottles (8 oz.) of POM Wonderful pomegranate juice, the juice of 1 lime and lemon, liquid stevia, fresh blackberries.

*Boring Disclosure: POM Wonderful did send me a complimentary package of their 100% Pomegranate Juice. I would have chosen to make the cocktail with their juice regardless if they sent it to me or not, because I like their products.

*Agave, raw honey or organic cane sugar would work in place of the liquid stevia.

Gluten-Free product review: Enjoy Life Lively Lemon Cookies

I have taken advantage of the Gluten-Free Jubilee at Sprouts. I have no shame. I have been there 6 times in the past week stocking up on items like xantham gum, marinades, barbeque sauces, almond flour, frozen foods…you name it. Why not? Today is unfortunately the last day of the Gluten-Free Jubilee at all Sprouts locations. I would suggest you all go stock up, ALL marked gluten-free items are 25% off.

During my last trip, I decided to pick up a box of Enjoy Life’s Soft Baked Lively Lemon Cookies.  I deny that I have a sweet tooth but obviously there is a pattern here. I buy gluten-free cookies every time I am at the grocery store and I crave them every night after dinner. My boyfriend calls me the cookie monster, a proper name indeed.

Pork Chops with Pomegranate-Mushroom Sauce and Roasted Tomatoes

I love cooking with different wines, juices and making up different sauces. It can be quick and easy as long as you know the basic steps. Recently, I received a sampling of the POM wonderful pomegranate juice and immediately thought it would pair well with pork.  Pork is a meat that can be made quickly and goes well with a variety of seasonings and sauces.

I have always been a big fan of POM wonderful juices so I was thrilled to see what I could come up with in the kitchen that would be gluten-free. POM wonderful juice is a great source of potassium and iron. The juice also has a slight tart taste. [Read more...]

Desert Essence Fragrance Free Collection

A hidden source of gluten is often found in shampoos, conditioners and lotions. Who would have known? Many beauty products contain some source of wheat. Those with food allergies should check with the company to make sure their product is gluten-free. One of my favorite gluten-free beauty products is by Desert Essence. Their fragrance free collection is great for those who have sensitive skin.  The lotion is delightfully moisturizing, the shampoo and body wash lather extremely well and the conditioner detangles the hair nicely. Desert Essence also makes several other shampoos and conditioners with an assortment of wonderful fragrances.  All of their products will list if they are gluten-free and vegan.

Udi’s whole grain and white sandwich bread

Udi’s bread, hands-down the best gluten-free bread I have eaten in years. It not looks like real bread; it also has that same moist, chewy taste. Recently, I had the privilege of trying some of this delicious bread, courtesy of Dee Valdez, the Udi’s gluten-free ambassador. I had read several reviews saying it was the best gluten-free bread on the market so I was curious to try it and see if it lived up to all these glorious reviews.

When the package arrived, I must say it felt like Christmas morning, I was so excited. I immediately ripped open the package and decided to make a sandwich. The package label mentions that it can be stored at room temperature, if preferred! Hallelujah, my toaster can get a break. The bread certainly lived up to all the hype and articles I have read. It truly is the best gluten-free bread on the market. It is moist and flavorful; it holds up well to condiments and even grilled cheese!

Udi’s is currently working on expanding their products into gluten-free market across America. Currently in Austin, I have found this lovely bread at People’s Rx (Westlake), Whole Foods and Central Market. Udi’s gluten-free products are made in a dedicated gluten-free bakery in Denver. They also have other gluten-free products such as cinnamon rolls, lemon–streusel muffins, blueberry muffins, pizza crust and granola. All products are gluten, dairy, soy and nut free.
