Locate Special Diet is LIVE!

It’s finally here. After a year and a half of work and research, the Locate Special Diet website is live. Oh… it feels so good to type those words. Let me tell you a little bit about my baby…

Locate Special Diet helps people find local businesses that cater to a gluten-free, vegetarian, or organic lifestyle.

The database currently includes approximately 30,000 businesses in over 27 U.S. cities. Users can browse local restaurants and grocery stores by location, dietary preference and type of food. There is also a section to filter places that offer gluten-free, vegetarian or organic drinks. Austin is currently the only city with the largest drinks database, and it includes places to get smoothies, juices or even gluten-free beer.

Don’t see your favorite local business in the database? Users can submit businesses to Locate Special Diet and after they are approved by our team, we will add them in. This includes restaurants, grocery stores and drinks for any city. Our team is also furiously working to extend the current database to reach others looking to find places that cater to their special diet lifestyle.

I thought I would share some of my Favorite Things About Locate Special Diet.

Peppermint-Green Tea with a Twist of Calm

Keep calm and carry on. That is easier said than done sometimes, but I keep telling myself that. See the stack of papers above? Apparently, I need to have it all memorized by October 22nd (cumulative Masters final). Yes, I need to stay calm.

The ABC’s of Entertaining

Dinner party… those two words can be intimidating if you are the host. Panic attacks, money, menu, drinks, what to serve? Don’t fret. I’ve come up with a list that will ease your nerves. My ABC’s of Entertaining are below with pictures from my first ever, gluten-free dinner party. It was a huge success and my guests were very pleased with the meal. Their favorite part? The wine poached pears topped with mascarpone coconut cream. Who knew I had the dessert gene in me?

The POM Perfect Cocktail (Gluten-Free)

All you need is a pitcher, serving glasses, Hibiscus tea or Red Zinger Tea, 1 bottle of champagne, 2 small bottles (8 oz.) of POM Wonderful pomegranate juice, the juice of 1 lime and lemon, liquid stevia, fresh blackberries.

*Boring Disclosure: POM Wonderful did send me a complimentary package of their 100% Pomegranate Juice. I would have chosen to make the cocktail with their juice regardless if they sent it to me or not, because I like their products.

*Agave, raw honey or organic cane sugar would work in place of the liquid stevia.

Green Mocktails (Gluten-Free)

What do you do when your greens and fruits are on their “almost” last leg? You make a mocktail- a non alcoholic cocktail. Lately, I have experimented with different blends of vegetables and fruits to come up with either a breakfast type smoothie or a refreshing greens drink. So far, my favorite has been this green mocktail. It is super easy to make and very healthy! I used all organic ingredients and some local products, including the protein powder and honey (from a company based out of Round Rock). The protein powder, almond butter and almond milk are optional. If you want a thinner version of this drink, eliminate the ingredients listed in the above sentence and just add water along with the fruits, vegetables and honey. [Read more...]

GT’s Raw Organic Kombucha

Edit: February 8, 2010. I get a lot of questions asking if GTS Kombucha is gluten-free. The answer is YES, it is. Along with our local company, Buddha’s Brew.

Kombucha is one of my favorite healthy drinks. It takes a while to get used too. Some say that is smells a little funky.

I have tried plenty of brands out there and the one that is the most consistent with flavor is GT’s Kombucha. They recently came out with 4 new flavors.

Of the new four flavors, No. 7 is my favorite. With hints of hibiscus and orange peel, it is spicy and satisfying.

It has 60 calories for the whole bottle, 4 grams of sugar and 14 carbohydrates. Vitamins (such as the B-vitamins) and probiotics are naturally occurring in the drink because of the fermentation process.

According to GT’s bottle, some of the benefits of drinking kombucha include:

1) Digestion support

2) Faster metabolism

3) Immune system support

4) Appetite control

5) Weight control

6) Healthier Liver function

7) Body alkalinity

8) Anti-aging

9) Cell integrity

10) Healthy skin and hair

The ingredients are: 100% raw kombucha, hibiscus, orange peel, chamomile and fresh pressed ginger.

If you have never had one, you will most likely get a slight buzz from it. You can get your legal buzz on while you work! :)

GT’s kombucha may now be found at most grocery stores around town. Whole Foods and Central Market seem to have the largest selection of flavors.

Cheers!
