ATX Gluten-Free News: April 2011

Welcome to another segment of Austin gluten-free news. We have not done one of these in a while; mainly because we made a large list of restaurants for SXSW and the gluten-free scene has been relatively quiet compared to the beginning of the year. We still have some great news to share with you all. So let’s get started…

Eddie V’s is rolling out a gluten-free menu on May 1st. Just in time for mother’s day! The arboretum location will be open for brunch. Both locations will be open for dinner on Mother’s Day.

AMC Theatres has introduced a new “healthy snack pack” at all their theatres. The snack pack includes two gluten-free food options.

Rice Krispies have gone gluten-free. Kellogg’s is seeking certification for their new line of gluten-free cereals and they should hit stores soon.

California Pizza Kitchen has a small gluten-free menu, believe it or not.

Gattis Pizza is offering gluten-free pizza at 6 Austin area locations. Their cross contamination policy is impressive. Ask for a “gluten-free agent” when ordering over the phone. They have specially trained staff for gluten-free orders.

Gluten-Free Deals is a website similar to Groupon that allows users to sign up for a “weekly deal email.” They are expanding into Austin and hope to include local gluten-free friendly restaurants and companies soon. They need people to sign up for Austin so let’s help them out!

Randalls, as part of their Simple Nutrition program, is now placing “gluten-free” tags over items that are gluten-free in their stores. Safeway also has an extensive gluten-free shopping list.

Hopdoddy is a local burger joint that opened up on South Congress. They have gluten-free hamburger buns by Bona Dea Bread. There have been several complaints about cross contamination, but apparently they are trying to work that out  now. I will be keeping you all updated on their progress. I ate there recently without a problem.

Taverna in Austin now has a gluten-free menu.

The second annual Keep Austin Gluten-Free food fair is happening May 28th, 11-3 p.m. at Food for Life in Cedar Park. It’s free!

Bananarchy frozen banana trailer is open with their spring/summer hours. Perfect gluten-free friendly dessert for a hot Texas day.

House Wine has gluten-free crackers and a new dark chocolate dessert option.

Click here to see what a sweet reader said about my gluten-free smokehouse burgers. Thanks Rita and Gretchen!

Jeffreys is a wonderful Austin establishment that is very gluten-free friendly. Many of their items made me made gluten-free, including their crispy oysters.

Soleil on Lake Travis has gluten-free menu options now that are clearly marked. I love the steak salad.

Flemings is another restaurant that can accomodate most anything gluten-free, including cocktails.

Austin Restaurant Week is happening now (April 10-13) and April 17-20. There are gluten-free options, including: Carmelo’s, Cru, 360 Uno, Frank, Garrido’s, Kenichi, La Sombra and more.

Bard’s beer recently gave me a list of where they can be found in Austin, check it out here.

On my Facebook fan page I have a discussion board open to discuss your favorite gluten-free friendly restaurants in Austin, as well as your favorite gluten-free resources.

Also on my Facebook fan page is a cookbook giveaway- Simply Gluten-Free Desserts. Head on over and answer the question to be entered in your chance to win a free cookbook!
