Celiac Disease, or simply known as gluten intolerance or sensitivity, is becoming more prevalent in America. It is estimated now that 1 in 100 have Celiac disease and more than 80% don’t even know it! Scary! The reason why some do not know they have a gluten sensitivity is because in some cases it can be asymptomatic. Some common symptoms for those that do experience them are; bloating, gas, diarrhea, cramping, constipation, weight loss or weight gain, etc.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, oats (cross-contaminated), spelt and barley. Overtime, gluten damages the lining of the small interesting and makes it more difficult for the body to absorb nutrients from foods, which ultimately leads to health problems.
Up until recently, many mainstream retailers were not offering convenient gluten free foods, such as cereal and baking mixes. Since gluten free living is becoming more popular, many companies are taking advantage of the open market, such as General Mills. They now offer GF Chex cereal! I was so excited about this because it has been a while since I have found a gluten free cereal that I enjoy.
The flavors are:
Honey Nut chex
I have tried the Cinnamon chex and the Honey Nut chex and they are so delicious! Crispy, flavorful and best of all gluten free! I have found these cereals at my local Randall’s, HEB, Whole Foods, Central Market and Newflower Farmers Market. They were all located in the regular cereal isle.
Another great product to hit grocery store shelves is Betty Crocker’s gluten free baking mixes! They come in flavors such as, chocolate, yellow, devil’s food, chocolate chip, brownie mix and cookie mix! Yummy! These also can be found in your local grocery store.
